Introduction
The 16th Annual Meeting of the European Council for Cardiovascular Research (ECCR) took place in La Colle sur Loup, near Nice, France, from 30th September – 2nd October 2011.

Over 190 participants represented the major research active groups in Europe and contributed to a programme noted for its outstanding scientific quality.



Members of the Council, presenters of critically refereed communications and a number of keynote lecturers contributed to a widely varying programme of topics.

Keynote Lectures were given on the subjects of ‘Microparticles in cardiovascular disease’ (Chantal Boulanger, Paris), 'Gene variants in the prediction of hypertension' (Giuseppe Bianchi, Milan) and a special lecture on 'Changes of vascular structure and function - consequences for CV risk' (Johannes Baulmann, Lübeck).

ECCR Prizes
The prize for the Best Oral Presentation on Friday went to Veronica Velero-Esquitino for her presentation entitled ‘Direct AT2-receptor stimulation protects from demyelination and promotes remyelination in an in vitro model of neuroinflammation.’


The prize for the Best Oral Presentation on Saturday went to Ties Mulders for his presentation entitled ‘Asymptomatic subjects with a positive family history for premature cardiovascular disease and high calcium scores benefit from treatment: a sub-analysis from the St. Francis Heart Study Randomized Clinical Trial.’

The prize for the best Young Investigator Presentation went to Jeppe Grondahl Rasmussen for his presentation entitled ‘In human adipose tissue-derived stem cells protease-activated receptor 2 activation induces VEGF without stabilization of HIF-1α.’

In 2012, the ECCR will have two major activities: (1) contribution to Frontiers in Cardiovascular Biology (FCVB), London, March 2012: (2) contribution to 24th Meeting of the International Society of Hypertension, Sydney, 29 Sept - 4 Oct 2012. The Annual meeting in Nice will return in 2013.
